*sigh* certain attempts at comedy can turn out to be problematic at best and sometimes just plain offensive.

friday at the embassy of qatar.
the two guys ordered food and the girl got a diet soda.
they went upstairs to sit down, and i went to get their utensils ready.
just as my friend was finishing putting their order in, the girl came back downstairs.
she proceeded to order food and explain that she did not want to order in front of the men so they wouldn’t think she was fat.
my friend and i just looked at her, we just took her order and looked at her.
sometimes i forget that shit like this is still out there. it was a visceral slap in the face and reminder of society’s influence.
but seriously, come on.

i tend to react negatively when people tell me:
“you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do”.
in my experience, that proves to be a statement full of lies. either that or it seems to be an (inaccurate) assumption of cultural, social, or economic circumstance.
it is a weird syllogism that is perpetuated by people who just don’t do what they don’t want to do, regardless of whether or not it actually needs to be done.
i suppose in that sense they are correct, but that seems self-serving which is generally not the vibe i get from people who use this phrase. i feel like this phrase is used to promote mental autonomy, but my immediate reaction is that it is a cut down capitalist ideology. instead of directly saying “be (buy) all you can be (buy)” the phrase subtly hints at american economic conservatism. i can almost hear someone in my head saying “you don’t have to do things you don’t want to do (read: don’t waste time and money), but here are some things that you should definitely want to do”.
idk, i’m probably over thinking it.
i really just find the phrase annoying and i can’t figure out how people actually believe it.
whatever.
a similar reaction is elicited when people say,
“it’ll all work out in the end.”
i just…ugh…i’m really not so sure about that one.
idealism and positivism are appreciated, but i just don’t feel that to be true.
I don’t know how you would greet dignitaries/executives/geniuses/superwomen, but I do it with a hug. Last week we (the International Business Society) put on a panel called “Don’t Let The World Be Your Roadblock”. Through this panel we sought to educate people across the campus about opportunities in international relations and business and the skills necessary to accomplish these goals.
And yes, that is me hugging Harriet Fulbright.
